Ray is a typical dude. He has a girlfriend that he loves, and a job that he hates. He lives next door to a girl named Tara who has a little crush on him. One night Ray gets drunk at the bar, and somehow ends up naked on Tara’s couch the next morning. He carries on as usual without telling his girlfriend, but Tara has other plans. She wants Ray for herself, and is will to do anything to have him, even kill.

Holy Mother of Gore!

The prologue (Is that an accurate term when referring to a film? I have no idea.) really sucked me in and prepped me for a tortuous and violent movie. From there, things move steadily and the shit really hits the fan pretty early on.

Tara is a freak and needs a damn good therapist, because she has serious Daddy issues as you’ll come to find. You’ll get a strong student film feel from this flick. Really heavy usage of corn syrup and food coloring, oozing-mouthfuls-of-blood shots, and even a hilarious fake foot toward the end. ROFLZ.

Things to look for:

– Kill Bill references (or rip off) during a kill scene
– Character inspired by Lt. Dan from Forrest Gump
– Inconsistencies such as no scarring on Tara’s stomach where she cut herself
– More terrible amateurish camera work, namely transpositions and for lack of a better term, the girl-shakes-her-head-around-then-speed-it-up-so-it-looks-really-scary shot.

I tried to find some more information on this film but there wasn’t a lot to be found. I assume that the producer had issues deciding on a title, because the same movie is referred to as both “Crushed” and “She’s Crushed”. Tara’s character also has a weird YouTube channel where she seems to carry on her character with personal videos.

Odd.

This is a low-budget film, and it shows. Tons of gore and torture and (I never thought I’d say this) WAY too much blood. It drowned out my interest. For fans of heavy eyeliner, boring desk jobs, and frontal lobotomies.

Cheers!

Calvaire/The Ordeal (2004)

Posted: December 6, 2009 in Torture-porn

Sorry about the hiatus! Many many things happening in life lately but things have calmed considerably so hopefully I can crank out some more reviews in the the coming days.

In this film from Belgium, Marc Stevens is an up-and-coming young pop singer (and I use this term very loosely) who travels to retirement homes and other small events to perform his love songs. On the way to a Christmas gala, Marc’s van breaks down when he drives down a sketchy road in the middle of the forest. He sees a sign for an inn up ahead where he finds a room for the night. After a night’s rest, Bartel, the owner of the inn graciously offers to help repair Marc’s vehicle while Marc takes a walk in the woods. The owner warns him to stay away from the village. Marc heeds his warning, however he witnesses something rather disturbing on his walk. That evening over a homemade meal, Bartel tearfully describes to Marc the loss of his wife Gloria who left him. It becomes increasingly obvious that Gloria is sorely missed not only by Bartel, but by lots of people, including the villages. What awaits Marc following that night is a twisted serious of events stemming from the delusions of men, joyously and viciously welcoming their lady home.
I thoroughly enjoyed this refreshing film. After putting dvd on, the menu popped up and the images there disturbed me from the get-go. I knew I was in for something special. There was humor placed in a few spots, dark humor that is. Marc’s performance in the beginning was completely weird and had me curious from the start. Beyond that there were many small instances where I was lead away from the actual story. The appearance of an infatuated woman from the retirement home lead me to believe that she may be an antagonist in the film. I was wrong. Again later, when Bartel comes into the picture I anticipating him being the antagonist. As the movie went on, that feeling transferred to “the villagers”, then back to Bartel, and so on. Misdirection kept me interested.
Calvaire’s imagery was outstanding; captivating, grainy, and beautiful and fully captured a feeling of isolation and a brisk winter cold. I especially enjoyed the last 5 or so minutes of the film, we see Marc transformed completely. I was reminded a bit of the french film, Martyrs, in the sense that I felt Marc had been stripped to his core mentally, emotionally, and physically until he had reached some sort of inner-truth. I felt this even more-so as he consoled a dying man and finally accepted his forced identity.

This film is stripped naked. The ending was heavy and I found it easy to identify with the main character. The simple title, “The Ordeal”. What could be more accurate?
This movie also includes a VERY odd and memorable scene involving a group of men dancing in a bar, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
A must see.
For fans of pig squeals, shotguns, men in dresses, and vehicles on fire.

Autopsy (2008)

Pick your poison.

Five young people just had the night of their lives, partying in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. They make the great decision to drive back home while they are all drunk. To avoid hitting a man in the road, the girl driving wrecks the car and they end up in a ditch in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. They exit the car and examine each other, everyone seeming to be okay. However the guy they hit was not. He’s stuck under the car and bleeding. Out of nowhere, an ambulance arrives on the scene. They load the injured man onto a stretcher (rather roughly) and put him inside. They encourage the group to come along, just to be sure they are all okay. They arrive at the hospital later and it becomes obvious fairly quickly that this isn’t just any hospital, and something very sketchy is going on.

Well, at least this movie was entertaining. Decent concept. I can’t help but feel that something major was missing. I’m all about a small cast but this time it left me feeling empty. I did like the mutilation scenes, they were pretty realistic. Was favorite part was when this girl accidentally disembowels a naked guy. HAHA. Yeesh.

As the story unfolds, we learn more about the MO behind these mutilations. I don’t want to give away too much, but it involves a doctor’s sick wife. This element was never cleared up for me. I was disappointed in the end of this movie somewhat. I was thinking “Sweet, revenge movie”, then at the last possible second it turns and it may be something else. Ugh. I don’t know really what to write about this. It wasn’t great.

PS: There is also a guy in a Rancid shirt tripping out on drugs that he got from an extremely tattooed mexican, fuck yeah.

To put it as simply as I can…a young couple drop acid inside an abandoned mental instutution. They start fucking around with an old electric chair, and somehow, the girl ends up dead and the boy, Nick, is blamed. He insists that the chair killed her. He is called crazy and spends four years in a psychiactric hospital where he is medicated and attends therapy. One day he is released into the care of a phsychologist called Dr. Willard who wants to write a book on Nick and his bizarre experience. They return to the abandoned building, and begin a harrowing journey through the hell of the human mind.

(lol at this pic)

I really didn’t know what I was getting into with this one. I read a review or two online, but those tend to be pretty hit or miss. “omG it waS soo boRing i TUrned it off and A lot of Blud 2”, and “THAT WAS THE BEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN AND POSSIBLE THE BEST ONE EVER CREATED IN HISTORY.”

Who do you believe?

I took my chances.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Within 30 seconds of the into there were brief glimpses of what was to come. Gory, violent images, paired with the narration of the main character, Nick, who’s experiences are the subject of the film. And what a film it was. Many twists in this one. I was on lock the whole time. The first half is severely melodramatic, thanks to Dr. Willard who’s white hair and booming voice remind me of Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter. Things got going when a few young members of Dr. W’s team (of course) decide to mess around with the chair themselves. Baddd…

From then on the film takes you into this other world. Part Hostel, part Silent Hill as far as imagery goes. There was a large demon monster also, and some genuinely creepy stuff, but after awhile this wore on me. Things went over the top and I was starting to think that this flick was a big piece of overacted trash. Then BOOM, out of nowhere, another twist. Nick slaps you in the face with some brutal narration and you finally realize that that is the point. It was a joke. The movie is what you wanted to see. I want to say more but I’ll wreck the whole thing.

From that point on, it’s a different flick, with a fantastic twist at the end. God, I love twists. Especially ones that make me think. I liked this one. Some parts you may find confusing, as I did in the very last scene.

But really, if you need a good laugh, check out some of the reviews here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0837791/usercomments

I am in no way saying that I am some sort of intellectual film buff, but I have to wonder if the majority of the people who write these “reviews” are big chronic fans. It almost depresses me. “I don’t get it! Too much blood! Wahhhhh!” For fuck’s sake, go watch a romantic comedy and stop trying to explain things when you can barely speak proper english let alone transfer coherent thoughts onto a computer. Someone give me a Midol.

Good film for “torture-porn gore-whores”.

Cheers!!

Martyrs (2008)

The first, Martyrs, directed by Pascal Laugier, stars Mylène Jampanoï as Lucie, a young girl who manages to escape after being held captive and tortured by her kidnappers. Fifteen years later and with the help of her best friend Anna (Morjana Alaoui), Lucie seeks her revenge.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

That is essentially the given “summary” of this film, or at least what I could find on the web. Let me tell you right now that that is not even the half of it. It might not even be a third of it. What happens after this is dizzying. Lucie’s ordeal ends and the film changes focus from her to Anna, and the beginning of her long and tortuous journey.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Anna is held captive by the same organization that took Lucie 15 years before. The goal is not murder or punishment, it is enlightenment. These people seek a martyr, one who can transcend pain and fear in order to take a glimpse of the next life. Apparently the only way to acheieve this is to endure being skinned alive and beaten senseless every day by a huge bald guy.

This film is not for the faint of heart. It is bloody, but I’ve seen worse. If you are a horror movie buff it won’t be a problem for you. If not…well, don’t say I didn’t warn you. OH, and the first scene (after the prologue) will blow your fucking mind.

Set in Paris, a group of young thieves flee the city during the violent aftermath of a political election. They end up staying at a random hostel…and whoops, it’s run by neo-nazis. Their bad.

This flick is so like the other one I was positive they were directed by the same person but alas, this one was directed by Xavier Gens. Both directers strongly emphasize the strength of women, or the way that they handle violence, pain, and fear, right down to camera shots. Bizarre.

Yasmine (Karina Testa) and her ex-boyfriend, after leaving the city, drive through the country to a small Inn to meet with their friends who arrived before them.

Soon after arriving however, they discover that it would be best to leave….immediately. The Inn is run by a family of neo-nazi murderers who want to kill them, sparing only Yasmine, who’s child is the missing link to their objective of “pure blood”.

Aurélien Wiik (Alex)….fuckin hottttt skinhead thing going on in this movie. Way into it. Unfortunately he gets whacked fairly early on. What a bummer, I was hoping for a sex scene. What I got were dirty pigs, a fat guy with a meat cleaver, and a lotttttt of blood. At one point during this film I sat back and thought, “This is kind of stupid”. I got sucked back into it however. Entertaining, really not worth another watch however. Too much fucking crying, sad music, boo hoo, I’m chained to a wall and my boyfriend just got his achilles tendons severed, blah blah blah.

I have come to realize that I’m just not much of a fan of the torture-porn genre. I guess I’m more of a standard 80’s slasher type, 4 lyfe.

I liked this part though, this guy was a fuckin’ dick!

Babysitter Wanted (2008)

A young religious girl moves away from home to attend college. After moving in with her super messy pothead roommate, she finds an ad for a babysitter on campus. She is hired on the spot, to take care of a young boy who seems to have issues talking…ever. Things are normal until a.) the boy wants bloody raw meat chunks for dinner and b.) some huge bald guy with liberal facial and cranial scarring breaks into the house and is trying to kill the boy. Anyhow, there is a “twist” ending but I pretty much figured it out way beforehand.

This movie was worth a watch, some cool scenes in it like this brutal dismemberment:

I appreciate that the camera didn’t cut away during this scene. You see blood, human meat, bones….pretty cool. That, for me was possibly the only saving grace for this film. It was entertaining and worth the watch, but I can’t see myself going out of my way to see it again.
